SC Updates for April, 1999

We need a jargon page
4-27-99: There used to be a handy Stellar Crisis jargon page that defined such words as builder and pop trick. The page - I think Aliza had this - appears to no longer exist. I will try to make such a page. Send me suggestions of words used in SC that new players prolly might not understand.

Why not start an ICQ page?
4-22-99: When I couldn't get onto irc.gamma.net tonight, where a lot of players go to arrange games, compare game notes or just hang out, I realized there was not a central page for reaching players. I wonder if I should start a page with ICQ numbers for players? It also might include e-mail addresses. Maybe even an entry for types of games and when a player likes to play. Just a thought. Let me know if anyone is interested.

Agt starts page on SC rewrite
4-18-99: Agt's SC Project is an ongoing project to improve version 2.8. I also have added a link at the Off Page Info menu.

Blank.org to move, expect down time
4-16-99: Unsung hero of SC, Nathan J. Mehl, reports that blank.org will be moving. The server, which provides sc-talk and other Stellar Crisis related talk channels, will be down from noon April 23 to the afternoon of April 24. Blank.org will be moving from Somerville to Woburn. (I have no idea where those towns are, so don't ask).

Tool returns with new URL
4-16-99: Tool v2.8.6.1 returned today. Make note of the new URL. The Tool Invite Server is up at its old URL, reports administrator Bryan Bush.

Cybernex v2.9.1 returns
4-15-99: The Cybernex v2.9.1 server is back using the February data base. Rowan Deppeler is asking at the server what to do in the future.

Now what: Cybernex v2.9 crashes
4-14-99: Rowan Deppeler reports that the Cybernex v2.9 server crashed, ruining the database. He would like comment on whether to reinstate the database back to the last save in February, re-start server with v2.9 but with a clean database, or make Cybernex a v2.8 or v3.0 server?

Voyager retires, again
4-13-99: The Voyager announced overnight that "I think i'll retire once again." He said, "But i'll still be annoying and respond to messages like BigB and Aggie." He said enough already with the challenges. "Going out #1 muahahaha.:)"

WebTV chat room established
4-12-99: Kevin McDermott reports he's started a chat room for everyone, especially those using WebTV.

Mongol Empire sets up clan wars page
4-12-99: Mongol Empire asks those that are interested in revising clan wars to go to a clan war page and to e-mail him.

Stargate bug fixed, games deleted
4-11-99: A bug at Stargate was fixed overnight by Rowan Deppeler, aka Frodo. People in a Classic Blitz reported being stuck on an update. The game had become nothing more than a chat room. Rowan said the "no updates on weekend" somehow was flipped for the series and no updates occurred. By killing games affected by the bug no players should record a ruin.

Voyager will take all challenges
4-10-99: Lynnley Whiteford, aka The Voyager, will take all challenges. I guess he has something prove. You want to take on one of the best, you want to learn from one of the best, you want to get nuked? Contact The Voyager. He promises to oblige you.

Voyager ends Rommel's victory string
4-9-99: Rommel had not played a Clan Wars game since December or so. When Voyager challenged, it had to be met. The result was a quick death as shown in Map 25. The loss dropped Rommel's record at Regensburg to 21 wins, 26 nukes and 1 nuked. This is a good lesson on popping fast and how to use the advantage.

Took off Invisible Hand
4-9-99: I may live to regret this, but with nearly $10 credit to me I took off the Invisible Hand banner. They weren't crediting my account despite people clicking on the banner. IH essentially was getting the banner for free.

Drive a foot for new-look clan wars
4-8-99: Mongol Empire is spearheading an effort for a new-look clan wars and find new ways to play Stellar Crisis. He is centering his efforts on clan wars in an effort to get more participation. One suggestion was a spin off possibly called Tribal Wars. Anyone interested in making comment can follow along at sc-talk or write Mongol Empire. ME also haunts irc (Internet Relay Chat), which is a good place to find a clan war game.

SC Awards posted
4-7-99: Results of Katuluu's SC Award poll have been posted.

Clan Valheru posts home page
4-5-99: Clan leader Shadow-West reports Clan Valheru has posted a home page. It has an interesting exploding gif and a banner from Aleksandr Sidorenko that I have not seen in a while.

Tool returns!!
4-3-99: Word in the SC community has Tool returning this afternoon. Yipee!!

Cleaning house (room) slowly
4-2-99: I missed my chance at an April Fool's joke yesterday because I was too busy doing spring cleaning on the site. I've been using Gif Wizard to reduce the size of my gifs, some of which were pretty hefty. Gif Wizard also looked at a few pages and noticed some links that were not working.
I'm slowly getting the links right - home pages, irc, overview and download areas have been inspected and made smaller. Some of the icons on the Dead General Clan pages have been reduced.
I'm also working on a project where you enter a special area and a perl script randomly boots out a playing tip.
My future plans include a tutorial area where you play a few simulated turns to get the feel of the game. Any other suggests? Let me know.
(I've heard the rumblings about GS news. It's gone. There won't be anymore on the main page unless it affects Stellar Crisis Room. If you want to know about GS contests, hirings and news, check out the Room's separate GS page.)
