Though this page is for June through August, for some reason all of the June news and about half of July have disappeared from my server. I can't find the posts anywhere.
Try GAP, Lugdunum now
8-31-99: The Lugdunum server will be on a new machine in a week. And though yesterday you could not reach the GAP (Game Availability Program), you can today, reports administrator Andy Graves. (Lug had a small hickup during the night, with a small rewind. Check those tournament games).
Tool gone for three weeks
8-31-99: Bryan C. Bush, administrator at Tool, reports the server will be down for several weeks. He estimates it will return possibly by Sept. 20.
Regens is back, sort of, but where are the rest?
8-30-99: I could reach Regensburg this morning - they probably shut down the server over the weekend as they've done it in the past. But the tournament and regular server at Tool are down, as is Fuschia.
New page added - opening moves
8-30-99: I was cleaning out my messages from sc-talk, and found several entries telling about possible opening builds. I've posted them at a special page, which in the future also will be available from the tutorial page. If you have ideas for better opening moves, let me know.
Server connections
8-29-99: Hey, what a dismal Sunday morning. I couldn't reach Tool nor the tournament at the same server. I also could not reach Fuschia or Regensburg. What gives? Everyone go on holiday?
I could reach Lugdunum, Big Orange and Cybernex, the only other two servers that I play on. But no games, sigh. (Where are you Goose when I need a nuke, hehe).
Got a gripe? Enter it at NOS page
8-29-99: I meant to mention this page a long time ago (and maybe I did, but I can't remember). If you have a gripe about how an empire played, then enter your gripe at the NOS (Nuke On Site) Page. The site makes great reading, too.
New Tournament News
8-27-99: The first-round pairings for the Yahoo Club's Tournament, and up-to-date statistics for Clan Wars Tournament can be found from the SC Room's Tournament Page.
Getting caught up!!
8-18-99: I've been on vacation, so I've gotten behind on announcements at Stellar Crisis Room. I suspect a large portion of players were also on vacation, getting ready to return to school - college, high school, junior high.
There were several home pages in the last couple weeks that were improved, or added to the SC realm. They included:
- Sir Dagonet announced his having improved his home page, which includes a growing list of maps from previous games.
- Jun Jun's Stellar Crisis Control Centre was added to the realm of home pages supporting SC. Jun Jun, a Norwegian player since 1996, he features a nuke diary.
- Kia's home page, which allows you to make a playing card for your empire. Interesting how the SC banner was incorporated into the card. Was I asked about using my copyrighted banner?
- Just in case you missed it, the Yahoo SC Club has a very useful index of information supplied by members. I know I have learned a lot there, if only from comments made by the infamous Goose. HONK! (Don't believe the last modified message. This was added in August this year).
- Speaking of Yahoo's SC Club, it's organizing its second tournament. The singles tournament is full with 36 teams. I suspect there will be a list for those wishing to take over empires that go idle.
- The doubles tournament has 13 teams - it needs three more. Overall, the tournaments should prove to be a bit more realistic than the last tournament, which was limited to one blood game. A bad map or getting entered early meant certain death. This time there will be three separate games to judge your worth before a finals round.
- Finally, the Big Orange server announced that it's fixed the planet-naming cheat. I have yet to hear for sure if that is the case, but will accept a posting by RedHat. The ability to build bigger ships than you are suppose to still exists there, though few players are capable of this cheat.
Marine Corps announces home page - URL is fixed
8-9-99: The Marines Corps home page was put in place. It includes a nuke diary, SC terms, links and maps.
Directory created for Yahoo Club
8-7-99: LifeIncarnate created a directory of important messages posted at the Yahoo Club. This is a great source of information not found anywhere else, ranging from opening moves by the masters to jumpgate defense, from discussions on breaking alliance to WEBTV users.
Added 8-17-99: Del Hart took the listing and made it so you could sort by number, author or subject. If this is kept up, it will be another very valuable tool for players.
Max releases Almonaster version 2.1
8-1-99: Max Attar Feingold announced the release of Almonaster code v2.1. Files are available on his site.
Almonaster moves up a version
7-27-99: Max Attar Feingold recently announced his upgrading the code to v2.1. There now is the new v2.1 primary server and the old server, where no new games can be played but old games can be played out. More information about the release is available at Max's info page. The source code and optimized binaries should be available soon. Any comments, questions, suggestions or criticism can be directed to Max.
Stargate, Cybernex fix name cheat
7-19-99: Rowan Deppeler (Frodo) reports that the planet naming cheat no long exists at Stargate and Cybernex servers. He checked error logs, too, and found two players had tried the cheat at Stargate, none at Cybernex.
New GS server dies
7-18-99: The new server at GameStats left the air for about an hour this afternoon. Sorry, I have no control over access at GS. (Just like I don't have any control over the build cheats, such as The Journey).
Bush offers assistance in fixing servers
7-16-99: Server administrators wondering how to fix the planet naming cheat or build cheat can contact Zach Bush to learn how.
Server outage knocks out SC Room
7-16-99: At about 7:30 a.m. Eastern time, the main Bell switching center in Toronto experienced a serious electrical fire. Power to the building was cut shortly after that. UPS power managed to keep the routing
equipment up until approximately 10:15 EDT, when everything failed, according to GameStat's network operator, Geoff Scully. Service was down for five hours. GS apologized for any inconvenience.
Beware, no servers are cheat proof
7-15-99: As many of you know, building an empire has its joys. But tonight, an empire named "e" used the planet naming cheat (%) which took the joy of a game completely away. Though he later allied out, he WAS able to continue moving his ships while I could not. (I could build ships, which was good). I talked to several people at irc, and they all have had the same cheat pulled on them where they could not move ships. This cheat apparently can be done at any v2.8.x server!
I suggest you only play on servers that are cheat-proof, which as of tonight can only be the modified game Almonaster.
I've listed below the admins for the various servers. Get a hold of them, tell them to fix the problem. I don't consider this spam, but rather informational e-mail. They've known of the problem for a long time. It's time to fix it.
No one will enter a game if they think they don't have a chance to win because of various cheats.
Zach Bush or Dan Carvel at Tool (which is still broken according to this "e")
Admin, PressEnter, v2.8
Red Hat at Big Orange
Aliza at Fuschia
Wolfgang Röckelein, Regensburg
Rowan Deppeler, admin, or Del Hart, code maker, Cybernex 2.9
Because of a bug in game, I am pulling the plug
7-15-99: As many of you know, building an empire has its joys. But tonight, an empire named "e" used the planet naming cheat (%). Though he later allied out, he WAS able to continue moving his ships. This cheat can be done at any server. For that reason I am pulling the plug on the SC Room until the problem is fixed by server admins. I mean fixed, too. I can't be pointing the thousands of people coming here to play to games where cheating exists.
