SC Updates for Oct. - Dec. 1999

Plans firm for SC Olympics

12-10-99: On the heels of the successful tournaments at Lug, comes an expanded version pitting players from around the world in an SC Olympics.

Teams are being firmed up in the next week. If you want to play you best get a hold of John Henshaw (aka Blitz), fast. He will need your empire name and where you are from (state/country). The tournament is limited to 16 teams. Minimum team size is four players, maximum is 5 or 6 players. Teams will be finalized Jan. 7. The tournament starts Jan. 17.

Captains are being sought for each team. Someone needs to decide who will play in which games. Teams so far include:

  • Canada: Blitz, HeLLSpawN, Krishna Babes, Predator, Spamland
  • Holland: King Arthur, Macavin, Nippo, Smurfs
  • UK: CereDigion, gnasher, goth, Lugdunum, Shamen
The tournament will include a dedicated server, an update page created by Jeff Spencer (aka Predator) and eight different games. The server code is a clone of Lug's, which is known to be very stable and cheat-free. Some games will be for medals, some will include qualifying rounds prior to medal rounds.

The Olympics will include eight events, all dailies, with 100 max agriculture ratio (so you can pop trick if you dare). A tentative list of events includes:

  • 2.9 mega-grudge, 15 sys/empire, 1.75 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=35/35/35
  • 2.9 high-tech grudge, 10 sys/empire, 4.00 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=30/30/30
  • 2.9 desert grudge, 8 sys/empire, 0.50 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=25/25/25
  • 3.0 glutton grudge, 7 sys/empire, 1.50 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=60/60/60
  • 2.9 rich-TLG, 6 sys/empire, 2.50 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=45/45/45
  • 3.0 high-tech TLG, 6 sys/empire, 4.00 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=35/35/35
  • 2.9 Blood, 5 sys/empire, 1.50 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=30/30/30, 8 emps/game
  • 2.9 4 vs 4, 6 sys/empire, 2.00 tech, Agr/Min/Fuel=35/35/35

History files for each game will be maintained. The objective is to ensure that the SC Games move along at a reasonable rate. Those wanting to follow along the discussion of the games can do so at the Yahoo Club.

Chest thumping: There will be the usual competition between countries and a medal race. Still being negotiated is a multi-billion dollar media contract with all networks.

John is also making tours of future SC Olympic Game venues, so you might want to line up your bribes early (hehe).

As always, these first Games are brought to us by the Canadian Olympic hosts - John (Blitz), Vince (Spamland) and Jeff (Predator).

World tournament discussed at Yahoo
12-2-99: The possibility of a world tournament, tentatively dubbed an SC Olympics, is being discussed at Yahoo Club. The tournament probably would include various games (events) similar to the current Yahoo tournament. The current tournament is expected to go into a final "blood" conflict at the start of the year.

Alexia writes Big Orange aid
11-26-99: Alexia (aka Aleksandr Sidorenko) emailed to say he's written a program to assist in seeing those huge 1,000-system maps at Big Orange v2.8.x server. The program, written in C++, is available from his page. Works only for large games played on v2.8.x servers. Let Aleks, aka Alexia, know if it works for you.

Almonaster starts BIG game
11-7-99: Almonaster started a new series entitled Galactic Madness that reflects the popularity of the 500-empire games at Big Orange except on a little bigger smaller scale.
Galactic Madness will have a maximum of 50 players. Each empire will be limited to three allies. In order to avoid nuke babies you need to contact Jeff Spencer to receive permission to join and a password. Of note, if one of your allies dies you will be allowed to take a new ally.

Yahoo Club's tourney results posted
11-7-99: Andy recently posted a page that shows the latest standings for Yahoo Club's tournament. He said earlier that it probably would take 14 or so points to make the finals. Though no one has that many points yet, it should be noted that most players have one or more games yet to finish.

GAP temporarily down
10-30-99: The Game Availability Program (GAP) is temporarily down, according to Andy Graves. He's having bandwidth problems - Lugdunum and GAP are taking up too much. Stay tuned.

Gooseberry, Kia add banners
10-29-99: Gooseberry sent a very cool banner today. I love it. I also received two very-much-appreciated updated banners from Kia that I threw into the random hooper of room banners. Enjoy!

Kia, AiE artists' banners on display
10-20-99: Kia sent me six nice banners created by AiE artists. I have chosen three to rotate onto the top of the page with the old banner. Thanks Kia, AiE artists!

GameStats to be down 30 minutes
10-17-99: A problem router will be replaced at 3 a.m. Eastern time Oct. 18, with GameStats and its many sites, including SC Room, not being up for about 30 minutes.

I need a better banner
10-16-99: I need a better banner than the one that appears in the upper left on every page. The banner must say something about Stellar Crisis, and better yet that this is the SC Room. Dimensions must be 120x60. The banner must look good on both a white and black background. The banner can be animated or not. I will randomly display ALL banners that I feel are pretty good. (Hint: it won't be hard to beat mine). I will make mention on the main page of good banners sent my way, use them on my pages, and post them with credit on the banner page for everyone to use.

So send those banners my way right away!

Pop trick info updated
10-9-99: Due to information from Blitz and others, the information about pop tricking contained at SC Tips has been updated. The most important part of the update includes the formula for pop tricking that shows you need a bit more agriculture than originally thought when tricking with just a few systems.
