2-27: Late update on Mk II. Discussion is flying at sc-admin, where you can watch the birth of a new game. The normal 10 or less messages a day escalated to over 40 since this morning.
Amongst topics discussed is the demise of SC v2.8 at Lysator, where a new server will host the newest game, MKII. Phasing out version 2.8 could start within a week.
The new game uses less memory, so it could end up on more servers worldwide.
Some like the new game, others are pointing out glitches and a few complain.
The list of icons is greatly reduced. However, anyone can send across their own icon. So if you don't find your icon in the listing, go get your old one. More later.
2-27: David Hedbor and Peter Bortas sprung a completely re-vamped SC game on us, dubbed as Mk II. But I'm sworn to secrecy to it's address while they iron our a few bugs. Things you can expect, besides a completely different look to the game, include:
- A game where you must nuke ALL ships, systems and home world of an empire to get a nuke, not just the home world.
- Fleets can be set to move on their own towards a system. They can be star gated.
- You can have more than one star gate on a system. You tell which ships are to be gated where.
- Trade/Alliance partners can now terraform each other's empires. They can also use each others stargates.
- Ships no longer can be named, eliminating the html problem. Ships will be given default names.
- The system update contains more information.
Other changes include a chat room and a new scoring method.
2-26: Bird's Former Empires are now listed since most of them disappeared when Lysator lost it's database. Few have met the Bird, but maybe they met one of its aliases.
2-25: Titan is the newest server hosting Stellar Crisis version 2.9. Contact person for the server is Steve Madsen of Miami University at Oxford, Ohio.
A neat feature, I think, is the game page shows who is playing a game.
2-23: David Hedbor, administrator at Lysator, is up to something dealing with how rankings are computed. Very mysterious.
Rowan Deppeler, who administers CyberNex, is working on administrative code for SC. Amongst routines he's working on are login message entry/update without restarting the server, modification of series parameters (Del's 2.9 code), and modification of user stats etc.
Cheat Notes no longer lists empires that have used listed ploys. The ploys are listed as an educational exercise, not to press one person's idea of how the game should be played on others.
2-22: No broken leg after opening night in Stalag 17 (I'm Kosgrove). I've been pretty busy last couple months with rehearsals. Note how I haven't had time to get a nuke (couple wins, though) for six days. Just thought I'd share this.
2-21: Yup, Lysator data base is damaged, but you can re-create an empire at the server and find your long-term games still intact. The data base was rewound back to October. A few people have logged in as other players, stealing their empire name. rats!
2-20: Lysator's data base is GONE! At least it was this morning, according to a message by David Hedbor at the log-in. Stay tuned!
Cyberchat is officially back after a four month hiatus. CyberChat the server is back. Also back is the chat room.
New is a SC forum for posting messages.
The server is at the end of a T1 line. More information is available at either SC page or the index page.
2-19: Cyberchat, the server has returned. Also back is the chat area. Stellar Crisis, from talk in sc-admin, won't be too far away.
2-18: Cyberchat could be back soon. We heard this two other times, the last being on Halloween. Trouble says he's ready to bring the game back but needs some help from current administrators. He posted message at sc-admin.
2-17: Update on HAL 0000: HAL, a SC playing robot, had a good day this evening. He won Knife Fight:28 and Newbies Only:269 on Vividnet and Blitz3:5682 on Lysator, collecting 3 wins and 5 nukes in the process.
Arrangements might be made to have players take on HAL. But don't expect a lot of chatter.
2-15: Dark Phoenix has started up another SC Tournament, with two brackets of eight empires each. Just warp on over and read more about the Stellar Crisis Tournament of Champions.
2-14: There's a robot playing SC games going by the name of HAL 0000. The robot won't, normally, return messages. And it will nuke you if you screw up. It's still in the beginning stages of development (can't do engineers, yet). Stay tuned for more.
Aleks, who maintains the Clan Page, is back in school for the next four months. He can't update the page as often. He expects to update the page every Friday. The page underwent a major change in looks in the last couple weeks.
2-12: Went through both the frame and non-frame FAQ to insert updated material and make changes where needed.
I didn't like heading on frame page - took up too much room - so I chucked it and narrowed the index column at left. The new planet gif also was added as well as changes made to build, fleet and ship menus.
2-10: Cybernex, v2.9, a Beta testing server, now includes a lot more games from which to choose. There also is a zip file for those wanting to download the new version of the game. Before playing at the stie, besure to read the v2.9 FAQ.
2-6: Rowan Deppeler and Del Hart set up a v2.9a SC server where they've made major changes to v2.8. Those playing new games should read v2.9a FAQ.
For a description of changes, click here.
Questions, comments and bug reports should be sent to Del Hart.
2-5: For players who think it takes extra time loading the SC logo and background, even from cache, Peter Bortas at Lysator suggests using http://www.lysator.liu.se:8888/(fast)/ This gets rid of both.
You can e-mail Peter Bortas with any problems with the Lysator server. Nothing quite like having an administrator on call.
I've added to this server Mike Wise's SC Battle Calculator.
Changed the banner at the top of the page. Kept the flames idea, but added black lettering.
All three servers hosting SC - Lysator, Vividnet and Regensburg - are using version 2.8.
2-2: A new server is hosting Stellar Crisis. I'm calling it the Regensburg server. It's in Germany. There have been a few problems getting it started up. Expect it to be rolling along without problems later this week.
