This game was played Nov. 5 against an empire going by Voltone at Cybernex v2.9. His record was one win, one nuke.
I don't understand it, but Voltone used a weaker economy to defeat larger fleets with fleets of the same size and caliber of ship. Though the mathematics dictate that this couldn't happen on the second attack, it did. Neither Voltone nor I can figure out how, but it did.
Voltone entered a comment at SC Room's guest book about the game after my initial posting of the game. He does not give details of what he built, bu says:
FACTS: He used a fleet of eight attacks to destroy a fleet of 11 full-strength ships of equal or greater BR. He had six ships left after the attack. With less economy, you can not build as many ships as your foe in the same length of time, let alone in less time. And if you try to do so, your tech advancement goes up less than your foe, possibly even decreasing. After a BR3 fleet was surprisingly defeated, I reached BR4 by not building for two turns and then overbuilt a BR4 fleet in the final seconds of an update. On the update, he had but two attacks to my 11 ships. He spotted my overbuilt fleet, pulled back to his home world and built four more attacks for a total of six ships that could not have been more than BR4. (Remember, I had superior economy and had just reached BR4). I advanced from ICU to ouch! to 28,30. I was nearly full strength after the three moves. As I moved to 28,30, he built two more attacks on his home world for a total of eight. His economy, as he built was 4, military 2. I had economy of six, military of 4 with all ships being full strength after the three space move. After he built the two attacks, his military was down to one. When I attacked, he wiped out the fleet and had six of his eight ships still remaining. A quick check with Mike Wise's java calculator indicates Voltone's ships should have been BR6. If his eight ships had been BR5, my 10 BR4 ships would still have prevailed, with three ships remaining according to the calculator. Now I considered he might have a builder behind him, and was hiding ships. But then, how could someone with a lot less economy build the same number of ships as I could barely build? This was the second fleet he'd destroyed in the game with his lagging economy and without having to overbuild. So, can anyone explain how he did this? Though it took three hours to complete, I got the nuke. In respective, Voltone writes: "I won't even begin to say that I understand the mathematics involved, but all I did was to overbuild to the point where I knew that the fleet would be at full strength prior to contact. Quite frankly, I was just as surprised by the success of my fleet as you were. One final note: Apparently in a v2.9 Hand Mirror game you get an extra system between the mirrored systems. The intro said Hand Mirror games had three systems per empire. I see seven systems.
