Rommel's string of wins and nukes came to an end with Voyager playing a classic opening that led to a victory in a four-system Blitz Grudge at Regensburg April 8, 1999. Rommel had not been in a Clan War game since December, so when challenged Rommel had to play. Rommel's record dipped to 21 wins, 26 nukes and one nuked.
This is a fairly even map, with The Voyager entering the game first. Since this game was at Regensburg, I knew that his home world was at 8,8 (two players times four systems each equals eight. Hence, the first player entering the game will have system 8,8 as one of their four systems.) Normally, in a Blitz Grudge at Regensburg, the first person in doesn't get a good map. This map is fairly even, with The Voyager actually having a slight edge in being able to be near his systems. I would not be able to fork his systems. He could pull a fork at 8,7 once he'd explored all my two systems off of it. Best lesson in this game has to do with popping. In an attempt to protect my system at 8,7 from three Voyager ships at 8,8, I had to move some ships around, leaving 8,7 empty for a turn. That was a BIG mistake. Voyager, not seeing any threat within a move of his system at 8,8, pop tricked. That's when I realized my mistake. I pop tricked, one turn behind him, but I knew that if he had two adjacent systems as builders I was screwed. The reason is that he could overbuild to .333 because he would have TWO turns to get to full strength. I would only have ONE turn to get to full strength because I was a turn behind him. That's what happened, though Voyager threw in the twist of building three ships out of sight at 9,8. He also built seven ships with a minesweep at 8,8 that I could see. I built seven ships, too. That put me a bit under .500, but my home world was still coming back from having its resources used to make a builder at 8,7. I should have been able to match Voyager's seven ships. It would have been a wipe. But when I saw those three ships float in behind his fleet as it landed at 8,7 from 8,8, I knew I was a cooked goose. The map is from The Voyager so that you can see more of the game. The system under Bird of Prey is a builder with ag of 48 after being terraformed. |
